I'm going to assume we're talking about the U.S, since you didn't say otherwise. Tobacco is the number one actual cause of death. Alcohol is a distant third, roughly equal to "microbial agents." Presumably this means alcohol is about as likely to kill you as a sinus infection.

What I'd like to know is why we make such a big deal out of smoking but not about laziness and poor diet.

Smoking even lightly has forever been one of the top causes of cancer and hence death. Now, while alchohol is also harmful, it is only so in huge doses. In fact, alchohol is also healthy to a certain extent however, smoking does no purpose except to pollute the air, litter the ground with buds and cause more and more people to get cancer. All this cost the government money. Smoking is seen as nothing else other than a bad habit whilst drinking is something that is already an integral part of society eg. during parties and have a higher value compared to cigarettes. Still, the government has tried to control alcohol misdemeanor by placing an age limit and in some places limiting the time when alcohol could be sold.

Not any more.
Tobacco does damage to everyone and it is naturally addictive. Alcohol is not damaging in moderation, especially with food, and may have a role in a healthy diet in the form of red wine, etc. Abuse of alcohol and use of automobiles while soused has gotten a lot of attention, but otherwise alcohol has a low impact on others. Tobacco smoke causes problems for people who do not smoke and can't otherwise get away from it including children in homes of smokers and clerks and waiters in shops that encourage or allow smoking.

Cause 2nd hand smoke KILLS!

I live in Vegas and I inhale lots of 2nd hand smoke. I hate it! Especially when the smoker is an older person, smoking like a train and coughing like crazy. Yeah, they don't care cause they are gonna croak any moment. Very inconsiderate!

If you are next to a person who is drinking, it has no physical effect on you. If you are next to a person who is smoking it does.
