Visit your local hardware store or home improvement store. Look for solar landscape lighting. They are now inexpensive and very common. A solar cell, a couple nickel cadmium AA cells, and an LED. It's by far the cheapest way to get the appropriate collection of parts that's also likely to work properly right out of the box. It's very practical. I used to think that a solar powered lamp was the stupidest idea ever. Now I have a dozen to illuminate my sidewalk.
