There's a project at school where we're drawing up plans on manufacturing birdhouses and I don't know anything about birdhouses.

My first step is trying to figure out what kind of material to use. I have some ideas, but I'd like to know a bit more.

Particularly, what's usually the best material to make a birdhouse out of?

I mean, of course wood, but what kind of wood and why? Something not too expensive, not too cheap and something easy to work with without being too soft.

I've made a couple from cedar. It weathers really well and the birds seem to like it well enough !! I've also stained it with red-cedar stain. The one I have out there now is probably 4 or 5 years old and is still functional.

My guys use old barn boards and stuff. It really doesn't matter. Pine is ok, don't treat the inside with any chemicals.
