Personification:
-attribution of human qualities to abstracts: the attribution of human qualities to objects or abstract notions. Also called prosopopoeia.

yes, is a personification, as is said:
-"as if controlled by a demon ( controlled is working as a 3rd person not-directly...and also, as a verb )
-she ( the one who is controlled )
changed her emotions to sadness - this bit,is not considered as a personification

Because as qualifying her persona,is said that she was as if controlled by
a demon ( personification )

(remain this bit as a max importance in the phrase context...even if you have to move it around...but you can not move it around otherwise you will be changing the context isn't it?!)

keep my advice;-)

a personification is when you talk about something which isn't a person as if it were.

your sentence is not a personification, but:

'the demon of sadness whispered something infinitely depressing into her ear'

would be.

to gauge if something is a personification, try to picture it in your mind's eye. is there anybody in the picture who isn't a real person? if so, it is likely to be a personification.

....

with your second example it is quite difficult to say whether or not it is a personification (but it probably isn't). if you want to change it so that it definitely is a personifcation, write:

'as she walked into the house all the spirits of the stairs, the dusty rooms, and the windows huddled close against her and reminded her of how unhappy she had always been here'.

close your eyes for a moment and see this picture. all those spirits are not real people - they are ideas pretending to be people: they are personifications.

If you actually state that a particular emotion is like a demon controlling her, that's personification. "Her sadness was a demon that had taken possession of her mind." That's a personification- stating that her sadness is a person. You do not state in your example that the sadness is a demon. You have to do that to personify it.

Personification is the act of placing human characteristics on an inanimate object. So the answer in this case is no.

No, personification is when an inanimate object is given human characteristics.
