It has to hurt in the sense that when you love someone deeply you suffer their hurts and upsets along with them, thus adding to your own burden of sorrows. If your child is ill, for example, then it is impossible not to feel deeply involved with his suffering, which is a kind of pain. If you have to part from someone you love (which is often the case when you move to a different continent), then you experience the pain of separation. As the French say, "partir est mourir un peu" -- to depart is to die a little. The final parting from someone you love -- through death -- causes acute pain, even when you are a person of faith and believe that you will at some point meet them again. Love is involvement with another person and to be involved to that degree is to open oneself to the possibility (or probability) of suffering.

I believe that if you are a real, true caring person,yes the loss of a love hurts like the devil. I hate cliches but "it is better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all"..I really don't like that say but there is some truth to it..At this point, knowing that you are a person that is capable of caring so deeply for another probably does not help but at some time in your life, when the right person comes along, you will have lots of love and life to share..Please,whatever you do, don't let this episode of pain ruin you for letting people in again, it is a very lonely place to be, as that is just what I have done. Take your time, grieve hang out with the buds for awhile before jumping into another relationship right away as they seldom seem to work, there is such a thing as rebound..I am so sorry that you are hurting but one day, this will be a memory and you will have learned more about yourself than you can even imagine.
I am 52 and been married twice to men that were mean as snakes so I decided, after much consideration that I need and want to be alone, not to mention I am disabled now and I need my space but I don't recommend this for everyone..It is just where I am right now, who knows what tomorrow will bring.
