there are two basic types
those caused by injury to the brain
and those caused by trauma to the mind
most of the amnesia in either case is limited or temporary, but severe cases can accure with either one
post traumatic stress disorder, often associated with military experiences, can cause trauma to the mind, though childhood pts is nowdays viewed as more serious, causing more temporary disassociation, or temporary amnesia
so to sum it up, in my opinion, it is caused by a physical injury or the mind having to face something it simply cant face at that time
