As another answer stated, your computer may be in hibernation or standby not actually shut down.

If it is in hibernation or standby, and you have something scheduled to run at midnoght every night, the computer will "wake up" and run the scheduled task.

There are 2 proper ways to stop this from occurring.

1st:
When you are finished with your computer, click on Start, Turn off computer, Turn Off. This will shut down the computer completely.

2nd:

Check Scheduled Tasks in the Control Panel

Click on Start, Control Panel, Scheduled Tasks.

Remove or change the time of any task that would start the computer in that time period.

Good Luck

in case you extremely turn the laptop OFF (that is Shutdown or Hibernate) extremely than only placed it into sleep/standby until now lifeless night, then the only difficulty which could turn the laptop on is the BIOS. This was fable, yet i've got heard that that is definitely plausible for some modern BIOSs to try this. I propose you're taking a seem at your BIOS setup parameters next time you boot up. on the different hand, now that I re-study your description, if it extremely is an old XP gadget, i do no longer be responsive to while that characteristic grow to be extra to BIOS. desire that facilitates.

I assume you have your computer in the standby or hibernation mode; where it is not physically turned off. A program, maybe your anti virus, or spyware may by default check for updates at midnight, and the computer comes out of the standby mode. You would have to check these programs, find out how to check if they are scheduled to run at this time, and pick a differnet time for updates.

I'd call an excercist. Cause that's creepy... I've never heard of a computer doing that. Not even a Mac.
