Any book published after 1922 is not legal to be free online. Some libraries do buy e-books and if you are a member of that library, you can read it if you put in your library card number.

only if it was published a really really long time ago and its copyright is no longer applicable. If that's the case wikipedia will have it probably. The only free book I've read this way is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The only other complete editions of free books would be ones never published. You might want to check the author's site for a few chapters or just go to a library if it's paying you have an issue with or just get a friend to lend it to you and invite them over so you don't have to leave the house.

When I bought Dave Pelzer's - The Lost Boy: I loved it! and bought it for about$1.00 used. I noticed a copy for about $2.00 http://www.epinions.com/The_Lost_Boy_A_Foster_Child_s_Search_for_the_Love_of_a_Family_by_Dave_Pelzer_and_narrated_by_Brian_Keeler/display_~full_specs

You should be able to get it here via Google Books

You have to set up an account and sign in, but it seems to be free.
