Don't waste your money - the four best things you can use are free:

AVG Antivirus is free at http://www.grisoft.com

Adaware is free at http://www.lavasoftusa.com

Spybot Search and Destroy is free at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

and SpywareBlaster is free at http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

download and install them all. I use them and I have had no trouble with viruses or spyware in years.

I believe the added security you can purchase from Dell is referring to either Norton or McAfee... in which case I highly recommend McAfee... you can certainly compare the prices at the McAfee website to see if you are getting a deal or not... and ask Dell whether they will provide you with the installation disks incase you need to reinstall ever.

If it's some other type of security please give details.

Antivirus and Firewall from a reliable vendor like mcafee is extremely important.. and will work great if it is properly configured and set to download automatic updates (just as windows update should for security patches). This combined with good browsing habits will save you loads of headaches.

Please don't listen to people trying to con you into getting a ton of freeware... if you doubt me... look at all the people using that freeware crying out for help because they've been infected... and you will noone with mcafee crying out unless from user error...

good luck.

nah dont even worry about that. Just get a router to share your internet, that blocks most of outside people trying to get in. Keep your pc updated, and dont download stuff from untrusted sites. That is all. If you follow these things, you will likely be fine. Nothing is 100% secure.

NO, AS THERE ARE SO MANY FIREWALLS AND SECURITY COMPANIES, THEY OFTEN "CROSS" EACH OTHER, AND THEN YOU HAVE SLOWER BROWSING, AND PROGRAMS THAT DONT RUN RIGHT. NEED MORE SPECIFIC ANSWERS AS TO EXACTLT WHAT THE PROBLEMS ARE, BUT IN TODAYS WORLD, STICK TO 1 COMPANY, AND THATS IT. IF YOU SET IT UP RIGHT, AND IF YOU HAVE ANY LINKSYS PRODCTS, THATS ALL YOU WILL NEED...
