LCD for 8 and 4 is 8; so

3 7/8
1 6/8

4 13/8 = 5 5/8

=3 7/8 + 1 3/4
=3 7/8 + 1 6/8
=4 13/8
=5 5/8

The answers above are great, however, improper fractions can be easy to work with too.
3 7/8 + 1 3/4 can be changed to 31/8 and 7/4.
the common denominator becomes 8 so 7/4 must be multiplied by two on both the numerator and denomenator.
31/8+14/8=45/8
8 goes into 45 five times and has 5 left over giving you the answer 5 5/8

3+7/8+1+3/4
4+7/8+3/4, [32+7+6]/8 =45/8.
