hey downwith... i'm reading scarlet letter right now (it's really good) and we're doing catch-22 next. we're also reading: the color purple, grapes of wrath, streetcar named desire, raisin in the sun, and the invisible man. plus a few others.

In my limited experience:

The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is the most powerful book I have ever read. But my personal favorite book is Catch-22 by Joseph Heller.

There are countless books that are familiar because of the fact the tremendous American Novel - the tremendous Gatsby; The Grapes of Wrath; Huckleberry Finn; To Kill a Mockingbird; Moby Dick, The Catcher in the Rye and Slaughterhouse 5.

Same here! It's such a classic!! It's a good story, but the context of it is rich and definitely like no other. It's also interesting to see the segregation, especially since it actually was happening at the time it was written!
