I'm planning on visiting Chicago in October. I've decided to stay in hotel in the suburbs (Rosemont area) to save money. My question is, is the CTA system in Chicago safe at night (9-10 p.m.)? I'll spend most of my day time in downtown. But I want to attend the Chicago Symphony Ochestra. Is it safe to ride back to the station at night?

Thank you all for responding. Looks like you guys live in an awesome city. I finally decided to stay in a hostel close to downtown (safe area), I came upon that from reading other post. Rosemont station would be my second alternative. It's just that I don't want to lose 2 hours each day on a train(time is precious in Chicago and I want to spend most of the time enjoying it).

You'll be fine. The blue line station (the one that goes to Rosemont/River Road) is a few block west of the Orchestra Hall. You should probably check the CTA's website to see which stations are opened and which are closed. After a certain time of night and on the weekened, not all of the blue line stations downtown are open. you need to figure out which one is open to dermine how you'l get too and from Orchestra Hall.
as for safety, it's not that big a problem. YOu might get a bum or two asking for change. Just tell him to beat it. If you get a little worried, be sure to sit in the first car of the train; that's where the conductor is and he can respond to any problems. Also, in an extreme case, if you are standing on the platform waiting for a train and some unsavory characters seem threatening to you, there are alert buttons you can press to call security. They are located under the blue lights in the subway.

If it's the terminal on Harrison, walk a few blocks to Campbell to get on the Blue line towards O'Hare. Either way, take the line to Rosemont (It'll be about an hour and a half, nearly at the end of the line). Then grab a taxi or walk. If it's the one by the 90, it's super close, like two miles. It's a 5 minute taxi ride. Or you could get on at Cumberland. Take it one stop, then get off and go the last mile by taxi.

In the downtown area, the subways and the Els are relatively safe.....and once you get out to Rosemont, its very easy and convenient to get to your hotel. The Blue Line runs along Dearborn Street, which from Symphony Center is 3 blocks west. It takes around 40 minutes to get out to Rosemont. Check this link out as it will give you directions to where you are going in Rosemont as well as cost: http://tripsweb.rtachicago.com/
Have a nice time when you get to Chicago and enjoy the symphony!!

Because that line is a lot of O'Hare travelers, it's far more safe than, say, the Orange Line (no offense to normal, well-behaved Orange Line travelers) to the South of the city. You should be just fine. Stay alert and aware, and keep your wallet somewhere safe (things you should do when you're travelling anywhere), and you'll definitely be ok. Have a ton of fun in my city!

well if your going to rosemont i think it would be ok. that area is pretty safe. I think that area should be the blue line. but if you go to much southest or west then it pretty bad. but your area near suburbs and rosemont, des plaines, ohare. no danger you will be ok. dont worry. maybe you should get pepperspray or mace to be on the safe side.
