There is a great book out called 1200 paint effects for the home decorator by Ray Bradshaw. It show you how to Faux paint and its simple and easy. I did two accent walls in my house and get lots of comments. People actually go up and touch the wall and ask where I got the wall paper. It took about 2 hours, (not including drying time between coats) and looks great.
Second. If you are like most teens, money is an issue. Try using fabrics. you can get great cotton tapestrys for really cheap and they have great colors and texture. You can do and entire accent wall or just use them on your dresser and end table tops. Use another for a colorfull bedspread and it will change the look of your room very easily and quickly.
As far as a theme goes you can go retro or the Hippie look.

I would suggest to first segregating areas for reading, dressing, sleeping, entertaining, a cozy space for yourself when you be by yourself and to do your very personal things.
Select a favoraite wall and paint it with your color - somethign bright .
Mark an area to display your stuff that you would be proud of/ like to show off - like your paintings, your awards,...
Select some good pictures with your friends, family, dog, ... and get them framed in a similar style and hang them around. You can even group them and mix and match accourding to your taste.
Make sure you pick only one bedspreads and other furnishings and accessories at a time that way you will have different types to match your different moods.
Most important of all keep your room clean and organized all the time - only then it will look beautiful and inviting.

I would suggest using something you like or are interested in and build your room around that. It could be a color (blue, etc. ) or something (butterflies, music, Bratz). By using a theme you really like you will have a better chance of enjoying your room more.

your room should match your tastes, who you are...
What moves you...
What do you like to do, what are you into?
