the simple parts can be answered directly from the Ford Motor Company's website.

Btw, Henry Ford also started the Cadillac Motor Car company. AND, he did that before he started the Ford company.

I'd not categorize tranportation as either luxury or necessity -- and it does contribute a lot to economic efficiency, which is worth something.

I think you need to specify your time frame and who the prospective buyer is to make such statements. [My grandduaghter lives in NYC and doesn't own a car. My son-in-law is from the Bronx -- he literally didn't learn to drive until we was in his 20s and had moved out of state. To them, a car wasn't a necessity.]

I suggest the price elasticity as seen by a single company is fairly steep. [small change in price produces large change in volume.] The world auto industry has significant overcapacity -- at least 10 million units per year on world sales of 70+ million. There are lots of companies and the largest six or so compete fiercely in multiple markets.

Still, when all the companies offer rebates on sales of their cars, it does seem as if more total cars are sold than when no companies are offering rebates. That suggests the industry price elasticity is less steep than that an individual company faces.
