ok so i need help with these answers so i can explain them to my cousin with his homework i need answers and explaining...:)


solve for x
1. 2p=kx-q

2.e=rx

solve for y
1.ry+s=ts-m

2.2/3y+k=j

3.2/3y+a=a+b

They are all the same, so I'll just take one and explain it for you.

2p = kx - q; solve for x

First thing you do is to move a term with x in it to one side of equal sign and everything else on the other side.

2p + q = kx

Actually, let's flip this over, so it'll be easier to look at....

kx = 2p + q

You want just x on left side, so k is extra. You notice, kx is x multiplied by k.... you can divide this by k and get rid of it. Now, divide BOTH SIDES by k. Remember to divide the BOTH SIDES to keep both sides of equal sign EQUAL.

(kx)/k = (2p + q)/k

now simplify this by cancelling out the k on left side

x = (2p + q)/k

This method can be used for ALL of your problems. Move the term containing what you want to one side, and everything else to the other side. If you have too extra terms, divide the WHOLE thing by that term and simplify them.

Your cousin needs to have an understanding of the basics of algebra.

1. For the number a there is an addition inverse (-a) such
that a+(-a)=0 {this includes subtraction}
2. For the number a there is an multiplication inverse (1/a)
such that a(1/a)=1 {this includes division}
3. a+b = b+a The commutative property of addition and
subtraction
4. ab = ba The commutative property of multiplication
and division
5. a+(b+c) = (a+b)+c The associative property of addition
and subtraction
6. a(bc) =(ab)c The associative property of multiplication
and division
7. a(b+c) = ab+ac Multiplication and division are distributive
over addition and subtraction
8. When addition, subtraction, multiplication or division
or is done to one side of an equation the same must be
done to the other side
9. And the obvious a=b is the same as b=a

These nine rules are the key to manipulating all algebraic
equations.

Solving 2p=kx-q for x
use (9) kx-q=2p
use (1), (8), (3) and (5) q+kx-q=q+2p --> kx=2p+q
use (2) and (8) (1/k)kx=(1/k)(2p+q) --> x=(2p+q)/k

Are 1 and 2 for x refferring to the same 'x'?

If so then, x = e/r
and 2p = k(e/r) - q
Thats it since you ONLY have 2 equations and SIX Variables! WOW thats impossible I don't know what yiur cousin is expected to do...


For y, let's see:
ry = ts - m -s
y = (ts - m - s) / r

2/3 y = j - k
2/3 [(ts-m-s)/3] = j - k
2/3 [(ts-m-s)/3] = b (WHY would knowing b HELP?)
anyways thios is again an imcomplete question, since you have so many variables and so little equatins, remember for the equation to be solve algebraically, the variable vs equation ratio needs to be 1:1
