Does you computer randomly lock up?

I just got a new Compaq laptop with Vista (I had XP before) and it has been doing this. I've noticed it does it more when it is on A/C power, charging. How do I search for something to stop this? I got Avast antisvirus, like on my old one, and now, its asking for a key or something to get it to start. I got it from download.com. Is it a virus or just a windows thing[600 dollars to a macbook =) ]

did you buy the laptop with vista on it, or install it yourself? if you bought it pre-installed, maybe call support.

you could turn on the CPU-meter (a sidebar widget), and see if the CPU is pegged at 100% when this is happening. If so, it's probably a software issue.

best of luck!

first of all never download demo or trail versions of software onto your computer... it is a pain sometimes to uninstall it... and if you don't buy it can get nasty on you.

if your having problems with you're system take it back to where you bought it from and let them sort it out for you...

now you should have done your home work into Vista before you got a system with it on.... Vista is nothing but problems and as been from day one, and will continue to be for years to come. with all the bugs it has...

it took MS 7yrs to sort out XP and it is still not at it peak performance like it should be...

Could be either. If your computer is on the lower end, chances are its the computer itself. If not, try uninstalling Avast and seeing if it helps. If that doesn't work, just go to the Microsoft website!!
