Any ideas on how to get rid of rats?

We have rats in our shop rat poison appears not to work and the cat cant seem to catch them. They go places she can't.Anyone got suggestions on how to get rid of them?

need more info, what type of shop??? this is very important, some shops you can not use rat posion inside, and even the ones where you can, you might rethink the good chance of a rat dying inside your walls and smelling up the place. rat posion not working, remove any food source, and water (put food stuff in cans, clean trash cans works well.) make posion more appealling, some use peanutbutter, some chicken grease ect. live catch works well and kill traps also, either way you have the critter, you can catch them and take them far away to a field in the country, miles away. hey some folks do do this.
really check the web on rats breeding, you will be amazed at how many a pair can have in a year... you will have to stay on top, find where they "were" coming in, were because they can set up house (nest) inside, but it never hurts to close up any holes, best to use bleach, pour a little in the hole, and then put some inside a ballon and stuff into the hole (please be mindful that if a kid sees the balloon they will want to play with it), stuff it into the hole. reason , we all know that a balloon will let its air out, really pretty quick, well bleach inside the balloon will act as a 2-6 month rat stop, rats has keen smelling and the bleach will leech from the balloon, rather slowly, it works well.
good luck, and cats really dont catch mice anymore they have become to domesticated.. if the cat is cathcing rats, be mindful of all the nasty's rats carry, fleas, ticks ect... remember the black pleage... rats, depending on the cat is not a good deal (at all)

use non violent mouse traps, not poison or those snapping things and then just drop the little guys off in some field. As for rats, use walnuts as bait but before you put it on the trap, a larage VICTOR rat trap, nail that trap into the floor so it doesn't move. Then bait it. the rat will have it's neck broken and will die instantly. but USE WALNUTS!!! not cheese, not meat, WALNUTS!!!

Rats will only eat the bait if its better than the food they have found. If a rat knows it has been poisoned it will return to the source and urinate on the poison to alert other rats to the danger. Rodenticides are extremely dangerous. Most destroy the ability for the blood to clot. They are anti-coagulants and are secondary poisons. So if a cat eats a poisoned rat it will die too. Use rat traps and bait with peanut butter or maraschino cherries. Rats can not resist either.

This won't get rid of them necessarily,but works great to catch them in rat traps.First-nail your traps to heavy sections of 2X4,so they won't be able to drag traps away while still alive.Then,take some large kibble dog food-I use Pedigree-and drill a small hole about 1/3 deep.Then,screw the kibble onto the trap.They won't rob your trap,gets 'em everytime!

Rat poison (decon). Have any holes in your yard or by your house (rat holes)? throw decon down them. Or decon in rooms. Make sure your pets don't get it instead. No pets? Toss decon around your yard or in your home with no worry. Rat traps placed along the wall with cheese or peanut butter. (rats use the wall to see viva whiskers due to bad vision) kill one, then reset till a week goes by with the trap not going off. Anything less is basically a joke. Don't feel bad about it either. They leak piss everywhere they walk and spread disease. I've gotten really sick due to leaving food (rice) out on my stove then eating it the next day. Only to find rats running in and out of my stove. Caught like 6 of them. I had no clue till I seen one.

You could try rat trapt- they are like GIANT mouse traps-watch your fingers! but i find the rats are too smart for them. Have even tried peanut butter in a net bag on the bait hook and they still sprung the trap, got the food and left.....and i am a good trapper.
I had some burrowing rats in my chicken house that were so brazen as to even once have a chicken by the leg trying to pull it down the hole....that had to stop, so i went to the feed/ farm supply store ( same place you would get the rat traps, BTW)and got some "Bar bait"- it is a solid yellow grain type bait with a hole down the middle you can put a wire thru it and tell whether they are eating it or not, and not carry it down the hole if you dont want them to. it has that warfarin in it that is a blood thinner. one package breaks apart into 8 bars - i wire them up so i can tell where they are eating it. DO cover it up so that the rat can get it but not the cat (milk crate?) it takes a couple of feedings, makes them really stupid and slow. found one rat sitting at the chicken feeder in the morning so i hit him with a shovel. I also found other dead ones outside too. this stuff works, there are 2 brands i know of. GL

You definatly need to get some EAGLE 7.....It really works........and keep it around even when you do not see mice..........Or get some bigger traps........not the tiny mouse traps........
