There could be any number of conditions such as him deciding that he doesn't like you or doesn't like girls, to the circle of friends ("clique") he's in making fun of boys who have female friends - girlfriends or otherwise - or for no reason at all; sometimes people do stupid or strange things for no reason.
There could be external issues. A little over thirty years ago, I had met a girl in a department store, I gave her my number, and she called me from time-to-time. Well, as a result of a bunch of things, my mother decided I should not be talking to this girl. Actually, she was of the opinion I shouldn't be talking to any girl; her exact words were "A 16-year-old boy should not be having a girlfriend." Now, I realize how ridiculous that was, but then I was too young to know this. His mother could have invoked the same sort of prohibition upon him.
So if it's any consolation to you, it could be he really doesn't have a reason, or he could be acting mean, or he could be forced, or something else. Since you have more or less lost him, you could ask him why, pointing out that you're not trying to force anything with him, you just want to know why his attitude toward you changed in case you did something wrong so you'll know enough not to do it again with someone you'd like to be friends with in the future. (You may want to think about how to say it so it sounds like you think you did wrong and figure you can't fix the problem in his case but you want to fix it for the next guy.)
Here, what you're doing is taking the onus and making it look like you think it's your fault. If he doesn't realize he's given you mixed signals, it may change him. Maybe he didn't think you wanted to be friends. So, by doing it this way, you take the pressure off him, and what you're effectively saying is that you think you screwed up and lost him as a potential friend and you'd like not to do that again, how can you prevent it.
Realize here that I'm not claiming you did do anything wrong; what I'm suggesting is that you make it look like you're claiming you are because you want to gather information, and it probably looks better this way, because you're not accusing him of doing anything, you're implying that you think you did.
You've got nothing to lose and you might learn something.

He may have felt pressured to talk to you that night because he was alone and you may have been pushy, and I'm not saying that you were meaning to be pushy, but it might have come across that way.
Some people don't like to hang out with people during school hours because it might hurt their 'image' but are completely different outside of school.
This is the main reason why I never went out with anyone that went to the same school or really hung out with people from my school. The rumor mill / wishy-washy stuff drove me insane. Just chin up and you'll be ok.
