You must first find all entrances to the nest. After completing this task, you get to use some chemicals. if your state allows, get some phosphene gas tablets, throw them in the holes and wet them in order to activate them. Remember to then plug the holes with newspaper or rocks. Extreme caution should be used, because while they will do a number on the wasps, the gas will kill you too if inhaled.

For a more ghetto (and safer) approach, use gasoline in the holes.

Here's an idea; I don't know for certian if it would work but its worth a try.

You could try setting off a bug-bomb right next to the nest and immediately cover with an inverted tar bucket or garbage can etc to contain the fumes in the nest area (make sure it seals well around the base) weight it if necessary. Wait until evening when they will all be in the nest. The next day, when it comes time to uncover, you might want to tie a long rope to the can to pull it off just in case all you did was get them mad.

Wait until they aren't active (usually around evening time) and pour gasoline down the opening and toss a match on it. If not then wait and drown the opening with wasp spray that also kills yellow jackets. I had one in my yard at the side of the house and my husband drowned the hole with the spray until it foamed up an inch high over the hole. Voila! no more yellow jackets. Hope this helps you. And please be careful and don't get stung.

Wait till they have returned to nest (Night) and have stopped swarming.
Liberally sprinkle "Carbyrl" (Powder insecticide) around entrance/s. When they leave in morning they will go thru it and the next night will carry it on their feet in to nest. With in a couple of days they should be dead.

A skunk got into a big one I had in my yard and dug it out and actually ate them all.
Raid, kills them, you have to keep at it. I got stung four or five times. Gas didn't work. Fuel oil didn't work. Hornet spray? they seemed to like that. I'll watch for a good idea here.
