I'm just starting an album there, and so far it looks like if anyone wants to see the pictures they need a Yahoo account.
If that's the case, any other good places to post photos and have them not publicly available, but available to whom I choose?

anyone can view pictures on flickr. now if you mark your pictures as private, then only those that have flickr accounts marked as your friends/family will be able to view them. and if someone wants to download your pictures he or she needs to have flickr account.

Anyone can view your public pictures. Like stated above, pictures marked for friends/family only can only be seen by Flickr members that you've allowed access.
In case you want to share personal pictures with non-Flickr members, you could use http://invitr.swal.org/

well, you don't have to be a yahoo member. you can make a website from flickr (i forgot how, i just wandered and found it, sorry) and people can see it all. however, you can choose to let only invited people see it by going into the options of the photo and changing it from public to private.

Anyone can access Flickr photos ... you don't need a Yahoo account and you don't need to be logged in.

Anyone, even non-Yahoo members can view Flickr photos.
To post ..... YES.
You must have a Yahoo account to post photos.

wow wish i could do two at the same .my son has to sign out then i sign in even just for 15 minutes on here.It gets to be kind of a drag
