It would have to be fire. That really started humans on the road of intelligence, language, industry, and technology.
Then the printing press (Gutenberg, in 1430) allowed information and education to be available to anyone, not just the privileged.
Of course, the internal combustion engine (invented in 1826) certainly contributed to transportation and technology (as well as pollution and suburban living).
More recently, I would have to say it was the computer (invented in 1941 by Konrad Zuse). Then the hard drive in 1955 and the PC in 1973.
It would be almost impossible to name one invention as the greatest in history, but my vote is for fire.
Without it, we wouldn't be anywhere today.

There are no sizes to discoveries .Discoveries have meaning only to the Beholder.
Hubble discovered thru his telescope that those little dot of light in the Universe were not just stars but Galaxies.
Plank's constant was the basic discovery of modern physics.
Newton's Universal gravity constant was the Basic discovery of Classical Physics.
The Discovery of DNA was the discovery of the Century It explained the reality of Heredity ,that evolution theory had no explanation for.
The advent of the Computer proved the discovery that its no macht for the Human brain.
The discovery of the Scientific method was not a modern discovery. It was discoverved by one of any of our ancestor that had a normal brain and intelligence.

well i would say that the universal turing machine was the greatest advance man made. This was a theoretical computing device that was the basis for all current modern computing. Derived by Allan Turing in the 1930s. Allan coined the terms "bits" and "bytes" that we all know so well. The information age was dependent on this development so pretty much all modern complex technology and the science we have been able to delve into has come from there. Shame he killed himself at a young age.

This is a difficult question to answer. Much that has been discovered recently that has great impact, relies on some things that had been previously observed. I will go out on a limb and say Einstien's theory of special and general relativity have the greatest impact on the here and now. It shows that all the elements needed for life (other than Hydrogen) had to be created in a star that died long ago. However God created us is not in the literal interpretation of the Bible, but neither is the Bible completely wrong. First in the Bible "Let there be light", this agrees with what science understands. How could God give the rest of the information to a writer of the Bible without granting equal knowledge to the rest of humanity to believe what even most of us cannot concieve today. Einstien may have brought science closer to God, but our culture is moving away from him, unfortunately.

Man--that's a tough one. But here's my choice: the scientific method (worked ut over time by people like Galileo, Bacon, and Newton).
Its not a "thing" you discover, but I'd say its dicovery (development?) is the most important sinlge thing scientists have ever found--because it's the way we can systematicallly study Nature and make endless other discoveries.

Ahhh ... THE greatest discovery ever made ... is absolutely, without a doubt ...
CHOCOLATE!!!
And now we know it fights cancer and is good for your heart. No need to convince me though. One taste and I knew I'd found Heaven on Earth.
Really, who could argue that?
