Have you tried sieving? Basically, you take a semi-porous cloth and pour the mixture onto it. Then, you gently massage the water through the sieve. This usually works. However, if you need to get ALL the water out, the best bet is to evaporate the water, passing it through a pipe into a beaker.
The problem with sieving is that its not 100% effective, while evaporation is expensive and time consuming.
Its up to you to decide which you use, depending, of course, on the equipment given you.

The sugar will dissolve in water leaving the sand which can be filtered off with filter paper or cloth. Recovering solid sugar from the solution is not going to be possible however as you get a syrup which caramellises if you heat it up to evaporate off the water. You could use a volatile organic solvent for the sugar such as acetone which is easier to remove.

Fold up some coffee-machine filter paper in a funnel and pour the sand-water slurry into it. Is sugar dissolved in the water? Are you supposed to separate water from sugar too? That may be tough. If you evaporate the water, you'll get the sugar. But are you supposed to recover the water too? If you boil the sugar solution, you can condense the distilled water, but you'll start to caramelize the sugar too. Whoof!

Put a fine piece of cloth (not tight, create a dip) over another cup and pour the sand and water into it. The sand will stay in the cloth and the water will drain into the cup. PS - use a rubber band to hold the cloth in place

you can also use a centrifuge if you have one... or just put the mixture in a bottle and flail it around for a while... then extract the water from the top of the separated mixture...

Eat the watery sand. Let it pass through your tracts. Water will be filtered out by the bladder, while the sand itself will be expelled through your anus. Problem solved :)
