Not a chance.

Any country is vulnerable to a crippling attack. It is a matter of how fast the country can get back on its feet and slug it out. This was proven in 1941. Japanese planes crippled the Pacific fleet. In less than 3 years, the US had more firepower than what they had in 1941.

In today's context, there are many ways to cripple a country. Think about biological warfare and you will see that even the US does not have any hope in countering an attack in a conventional way.

The only way it can counter such a threat is a pre-emptive strike and faultless intelligence that is not shackled by red tape and do gooders.
Faultless means perfect intelligence and not half baked ones.

Israel has shown some outstanding defence moves. Although, I do not agree to everything they do, I must say that a number of their military campaigns and operations were brilliant and lessons for all, even the US. Some of their legendary ones were the Six Day War, the Entebbe Raid and the manner in which they established their nation in 1947 with less firepower than their enemy. When the world was numbed by the hijackings of the 1970s, the Israelis showed how with ingenuity and guile they could mount a rescue operation thousands of miles away and successfully. They relearned lessons and improvised in the same wisdom that the legendary General Orde Wingate and Mike Calvert thought them in the late 1930's and early 1940's.

Cutting a long story short, The US and any country can forestall and blunt an attack if their intelligence is very good and there is swift action on information.

In Today's wars it is keeping your ears to the ground that wins wars, not your nose in the air.

Well, the US has not got an endless supply of soldiers, and God knows we in the UK haven't. Having said that, a straight slugging match between the western allies and the others which could include China , Iran , North Korea and sundry others would, I feel be won by us. However, the kind of wars we are engaged in at the moment,ie terrorist campaigns are extremely difficult to win conclusively. Witness the debacle in Iraq and Afghanistan. The British Empire at its height got a bloody nose in Afghanistan and I can see that happening again. By the way the poster beneath me seems to be dismissing the UK altogether. If that is the way you feel then sod you.

Something like an EMP or sabotage to temporarily disable defenses and communication combined with strategic tactical nuclear strikes from a fleet of nuclear submarines in the pacific/atlantic oceans. Could concieveabley cause enough dissaray and widespread panic to mount a massive invasion. The invaders would probably seek to destroy and disable top level government and defensive forces command points. This would leave the existing forces unable to function effectively. They would then seize control of mass media to further the panic amongst the general public as they slowly but surely seized control of more and more major cities.

I would imagine an invasion would require to coalliton of two large forces simultaneous attack the east coast and washington. And the south west coast California etc. With widespread nuclear and biological strikes.

America's greatest strength is in their ability to form a partisan type resistance. Due the high proportion of publicly owned firearms. However as a nation the people are soft and unused to harsh conditions of war.

I dont know what thevinternet means by IF China and Russia joined forces American understanding of world affairs seems to be sadly lacking Russia and China have joined forces along with other countries they have the SCO (Shanghai Corporation Organisation)and they were practising war games a while back Iran has been invited as an observer as it already has strong ties with both China and Russia (an observer meaning a sort of trial member before full inclusion )
i`m wondering who you mean by US allies Europe didn`t go along with Iraq and would never enter a conflict against China and Russia who they are on friendly terms with
Its highly unlikely that another country would attack the US .statistics show that since WW2 the US and Israel between them have attacked and invaded far more countries than than every other country in the world counted together

Even if they haven't signed up to the United Nations, there are probably NO countries that could take on the US and its allies and win.

The way to beat the US way of fighting is to employ multiple decentralised, independent, financially sound terrorist cells.

Or single driven individuals with a major grudge.

The US missed Timothy McVeigh and Al Qaeda...

If China and India or Russia decided to get together, then it would certainly be very difficult for the US and its allies.

However, I doubt that any single country could defeat the US at the moment. You never know how the balance of power will shift though - 20 years ago, there were 3 superpowers in the world, now there is only one.

At the moment I doubt it. But who would have thought in their wildest dreams that Germany could take on the whole of Europe, Russia and later the United States and get away with it for 6 years.

Sure. Anything is possible. You never know who your friends are until you are in a jam anyway. Words are all we have at this point but people have been breaking oaths forever.

Yes, it probably is possible. Not because the US has strong enemies, but because, despite the face worn by the US government, the US itself is not one unified nation and will, very likely, fall in on itself one day. Internal corruption and segregation would ultimately help the enemies of the US , I'm sorry to say.

Who knows, maybe..but I can guarantee you they'll get a run for their money, it also depends how does that country(ies) measures success and at who's expense is it.
