Always put acid into water. There are several easy ways to remember this. One of the easiest is to remember that the a in acid comes before w in water in the alphabet. But the way I remember it is to simply remember A&W root beer.

Acids like H2SO4 and bases like NaOH(s) generate heat when they mix with water. If you add the acid or base to water, the large volume of water can absorb the heat. If you add water to H2SO4, the top of the acid may become suddenly boiling hot and spatter acid out toward you.
