When I was younger (middle school) I listened to crappy nu-metal, but other than that I wasn't really interested in music. Then I discovered punk, especially hardcore, and found something real to connect with. However, I'm in High School now, and I've realized that practically every band on my IPOD Is a Hardcore Punk Rock band from Southern California or New York City. I'm limiting myself musically. And I like acoustic music, Folk, heck, my brother puts on techno, I enjoy it. I just don't know where to start. I hate the radio because of the fakeness and stupid lyrics. But seriously, how can I be more eclectic?

Folk...try Bob Dylan. He's a simple folk artist with the best lyrics ever.

Simon & Garfunkel is also a great folk band.

You really should just look into various genres. For example, here's some major genres (not all are rock):

Genre: Artist, Artist

Metal: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden
Hard Rock: Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith
Progressive Rock: Yes, Pink Floyd
Southern Rock: Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band
Country Rock: Eagles, Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR)
50's Rock 'n' Roll: Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry
British Invasion: Rolling Stones, The Who
Rock/Pop: Beatles (part of Brit. Invasion too), Beach Boys
Soul: Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles
Funk: Parliament-Funkadelic, Sly & The Family Stone
Funk rock/metal: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against The Machine
Alternative Rock: R.E.M., Radiohead

Those are just some major genres and defining bands of those genres. You probably won't like all of them, but if you want more bands from certain genres, contact me.

Just try different types of genres and bands. Listen and see if you like it or not. Its not bad to stick to one music style, but its better to try a bunch of stuff. If you want some suggestions, I have some.
Try classic rock, if you like punk stick to more hard music like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and Grateful Dead. Listen to some samples and see if you enjoy it. If not, move on to something different. For acoustic and folk, I'm not sure. Look around. If you like punk, try Minor Threat if you haven't heard of them (though they are in the lines of hardcore punk). Grunge is always there too though even if I'm not a huge fan of it.

I think you would like the sounds, or the faint. They are kind of techno punk bands. If you like folk, Rocco Deluca and the burden, and for acousticdeath cab for ctuie is always good (but hey are very sad.) And if you like weird stuff try the flaming lips and deerhoof.

Branch out gradually. Pick one of your favorite bands, and then start looking into side projects, collaborations, and most importantly, influences. Rinse and repeat.
