Is there a transfer process with the computer, as there is for iron-on decals for t-shirts, or would I have to get a stamp made?

I've done transfers to wood with acrylic medium, and then burned my design with a heated craft tool (available at Michael's). These directions are maybe a little more artsy than what you're looking for.

You have to use a photocopy for best results, if you don't want to burn the wood. I've used an ink jet transfer (print it out reversed, or your words will go on backwards) with good results, but I've gone over it with a wood-burning tool to add dimension.

Cover the photocopy and the surface of the wood with acrylic medium. Work quickly, before the medium is dry. Lay the photocopy down, being careful to line up the edges as desired, then burnish it with a smooth object (I use a paper folder or an acrylic block with a beveled edge) thoroughly. Check to make sure your image is transferring before removing the photocopy by peeling up a slight bit at the corner. When all is transferred as desired, remove the photocopy and discard.

You can leave this as is--which will be a slightly lighter version of your original, in reverse. I've used a heat tool by Walnut Hollow called Creative HotMarks, simply burning over the top of the transferred image, to add depth and dimension. Have fun!

You can print it on clear decal plastic, available at office supply stores. Look in the label section.
