That depends upon the religion, however, I am assuming that you are referring to Buddhism, because they most often use that term.

Nirvana is the state in which a person is no longer a sentient being, it can only be reached after death, when a person's spirit has been freed from a continuing life cycle. If they have devoted their lives to their religion, which includes reciting the preliminary practices (read The Tibetan Book of the Dead for more information on that) 100,000 times, then this state can be attained.
