I feel very discouraged when teachers tell me a child "just isn't interested in learning". That could never be true unless the child is in very precarious physical condition. Any child who can do much of anything is inherently interested in learning right from the beginning. Remember, at first everything is new to them. They are curious. They drop things over and over from the high chair and stroller, and crib just to test the power of gravity and their control over other nearby humans (get them to play fetch?) They imitate right from the start. Want to know how to get a two month old to stick out her tongue? Stick yours out! She can't help it, she sticks her out too. So when you have first graders who "aren't interested in learning" something has been done to damage them. And that's serious. We were never designed to learn about our world and how things in it work by being required to sit still, be quiet, and handle writing implements by the hour. Children need to move, talk, explore and handle objects, observe the natural world, have many, many experiences with other people, other living things as well as inanimate objects. After they have lots of experiences it is more meaningful to then learn to read and write about them. They read to learn more about things they know and things that are connected to things they know. They write to share their knowledge with others and to share their joy in the world.
Yes indeed, we do need good education for our children and a great deal more of it should be outside of four walls, not sitting down, and certainly not silent.

Reading, writing, and arithmetic are great things to be sure, but they are not the most important things to know in life. Not by a long shot!

Yes, education is in portent but three-year-ODs don't need school they need their mom and dad. now the school board in my state think that three year old do need school. as you can guess the school system in the USA is falling apart although the school board would like us to think it works. I think school has its place but os dose just being a child.
