I keep getting a message telling me that my IP adress is being used on another computer in the system...I have tried ipconfig/release...ipconfig/renew..its not helping. Only one computer at a time is able to access the internet...as long as one is off, everythings fine for the other. It seems as though the DCHP is assigning all the computers in my network the same IP adress...should I set up a static adress? If so, how?
Please help! Thanks!

I assuming you are using a router for your internet access. Your Router is set as a DCHP Server with arange of ip address to assign. you can try increase the range of IP available to assign to other computer. Please check you router setting under maximum ip DCHP Users.

Secondly if you want to setup Static IP address, you must first diable DCHP Server and give the router a static IP Address. You must remember the IP address and the subnet mask.
Eg : I router Static IP address is set to 192.168.1.10 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0, then the rest of the computer in the network should set in the range of 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.255 excluding the router IP address of 192.168.1.10.

Eg : you can set
Computer A : 192.168.1.15 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Computer B : 192.168.1.16 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Computer C : 192.168.1.17 subnet mask 255.255.255.0

you must also remember to set the Default gateway of all the Computers to 192.168.1.10 which is the router IP address,
So that these computers will go look for the internet access through the router.

hope above information is helpful.

are you using a router or a switch to connect both computers to the internet? If it is a router, make sure that it is giving out more than one ip address. If it is a switch, you will have a problem. You will not get 2 different addresses if you are connected to a switch. To help you out, I would need more info.

to set up a static IP address, go to your TCP/IP (by right-clicking your network, then click on "status") properties, and type them in.
