A State, according to geographers is a recognized governing unit which must have an occupied territory, recognized sovereignty, permanent population and popular recognition among other states. A Country is the ideal governing unit which involves a State, and a single unified Nation governing the state.

In the case of federal governments, a state is an autonomous governing body under a federal national government.
