A solution is a homogeneous mixture. Black coffee is a heterogeneous mixture, however, because when you finish it, there are grounds on the bottom of the cup, and if you leave it to get cold and pour it out, there is a sludge at the bottom.

It depends really how the coffee is prepared. If there are no undissolved suspended grounds, then it is a SOLUTION. But then, if you think about it, you really did not intend to have some coffee grounds settling in the bottom or floating on top; what you want is the fine homogeneous liquid, so coffee is a SOLUTION.
