Well i would say the right way to go is to explore everything. At this stage the competing theories of everything aren't doing a fantastic job and most of what we have at this stage does not come close to the most outstanding feature of most of the great laws and theories to date, elegance.

I would pose however that whatever IS the true reality of all things we are probably a very very long way off even finding the right direction. So with this in mind we should not exclude anything until it has been proven to not be correct.

On the other hand it is clear that we are at the point that we know things are a lot more complicated than we accept.

As a parallel I would look at the Voyager mission into the depths of our solar sytem. All commonly held beliefs were SO far wrong. The planet/satelite paradigm was so far from reality its not funny, that really shifted our thinking on that topic and I would expect the same to happen when it comes to reality. Also we could just be over complicating things. Things may be as we see.

I think the next defining moment will be when the LHC (Large Haydron Collider) is finally fired up. This has been delayed and delayed but I think next year we should see it do something. Sadly the incredible amount of data will most likely take years to interpret but at that point we should at least see the boundaries between common physics and whatever becomes the truth about what comes next. That is unless it spawns another big bang, which is feasible as we know nothing of where he head.
