Women can join some fraternities. Not on the same basis as men, but you can be involved.

Bring on the hands down, but sociological studies show that fraternities are exclusionary groups that only further perpetuate gender roles and group stereotypes.

There are a lot of different styles of Frats. They dont All have houses, or the common "Movie/Media" Image thats portrayed. Often the biggest upside to Joining these groups are their stores of past Papers/assignments and getting to know people. Other than that whats the point? You can go find a bum, live in a small efficiency, and eat TopRamen for the same experience.

I knew a couple of girls who claimed to be in a fraternity.

Let's just say they were "initiated" by every guy in the frat.

If that's what you're into, go for it.

I've heard (years ago) of some frats having a "little sisters" group that seemed to me to be a sorority-within-the-fraternity.

They might be in a music org called Sigma Alpha Iota or other professional organizations like Phi Beta Kappa or Gamma Beta Phi.
