A really long cable or some sort of super antenna. It's not going to work 3-4 blocks away. Most Wi-Fi's have a range of about 300-400 ft.

First off,

If he has a wireless "G" router then it would only go around 500 feet. There is nothing you could buy to get a better connection other then buying yourself a router. Here is the one I have and is a nice router:

You can buy that one at Walmart for about $30. You could also see if any of your closer neighbors have wireless routers by checking on your device.

Hope this helps!!

an access point's (wi-fi) range is 100 meters from the wireless router. the signal is omnidirectional. this means that if you're inside the 100-meter radius from the access point, you can get connected. try searching also for wifi amplifier.

Thier is an antenna that extends the range but I think it wont be enough but you can always try. and buy a better wireless g that would boost the signal. also try to see what kind of router he has, thier are ones with higher range. your local radio shack sells em.

CONGRATULATIONS on finding someone closer.

No, you don't need a router. All you need is a wireless network adapter for your machine to communicate with HIS wireless router.

There are two basic types: Wireless B and Wireless G. Coordinate with him which kind you need. You may also have to coordinate with him the network encryption key, if he has one. (It's better for you and him if he does!)

Good luck.
