Different cactus require different watering schedules. Read the directions it came with, or look it up on the internet. Cacti are succulents, so that means they store water internally. Over-watering will kill them. Usually, about once per week is plenty for a cactus.
As far as space goes, again it depends on the plant. Cactus that spread, like aloe vera, will often need to be transplanted into larger containers, or into the ground. Other smaller ones are happy in little pots in the window.

You shouldn't water a cactus very often at all. I usually do not water my cactus' until the ground around them is DRY, completely. Keep it nice and warm, only give it miracle grow in the summer months when they are growing, keep them indoors in the winter if you are in a colder climate. If you plant them outside they will survive usually in the winter months, it just takes them awhile to get back to their normal selves after the cold season. I would honestly say that a resonable distance apart would be fine, remember how big they might get an plant accordingly. But really no other concerns, they are the only plant that I can not kill. =)

I read the advice of someone once who checked the weather in Phoenix Arizona and when they had rain she lightly watered her cactus. Space would depend on the variety. I am not a cactus person so don't know much. Sorry.

It depends on the type of cactus. Some like to be thoroughly watered just once a week or less often.

It depends on what kind of cactus. Is it indoor or outdoor type? Most outdoor cactus will survive on whatever moisture comes with the weather. It needs a sandy, gravelly soil.
