Skip (or Skippy) are generally the sort of random nicknames unrelated to the actual given name. Along the same lines of Red, Rusty, Bubba or Junior (when the child is NOT a junior LOL). I'm not aware of any formal name Skip is used as a shortening of.

I work with a Skip, and his real name is Hubert. It's kind of like Butch - a random nickname not related to any particular name.

my next to the oldest brothers nick name was Skipper his whole life. he died in march 2005.his name was Curtis Lloyd after our Dads younger brother who had died of leukimia.my Dad couldnt bear to use his brothers name so he was always called Skipper.
