I'm a democrat. I believe in equality.
Time for us to fight for it, period.
No special rights. No tolerance for those who want them or who try to use racial bigotry for their decisions (Chinese waiters in a Chinese restaurant? Sure, no problem, same for other such situations).
Enough. EQUALITY.

properly, i could think of that socioeconomic is extra useful than race by way of fact being undesirable is the actual handicap. regrettably, racial discrimination nevertheless exists and we'd desire the present affirmative action. the different concern with affirmative action is that, for my area, does not create equality in any respect. And is bigoted too. i could ideally desire something that reward actually skill and not race or how plenty funds you had. we don't stay in an appropriate worldwide although.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that affirmative action can continue for another 25 years. See: Grutter :vs: Bollinger at:
http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/02-241.ZO.html
The opinion was delivered by: Sandra O'Conner who said, in part, "We expect that 25 years from now, the use of racial preferences will no longer be necessary to further the interest approved today." The existence of and classification of the U.M. admissions policy as using and promoting "racial preferences" is a matter of public record.
In dissent, Clarence Thomas wrote: "I respectfully dissent from the remainder of the Court’s opinion and the judgment, however, because I believe that the Law School’s current use of race violates the Equal Protection Clause and that the Constitution means the same thing today as it will in 300 months." (25 years).
I find that Justice Thomas' dissent pretty much expresses my own thoughts on the subject. In other words, the way to stop racial discrimination is to stop discrimination on the basis of race. If you want to punish the people who instituted and profited from slavery, then go dig them up and haul them into a courtroom. The claim that affirmative action tends to "level the playing field", and thereby brings more "fairness" into the admissions process, is childishly absurd and unworthy of a thinking human being.
The question asked whether or not people should be given an equal chance to get into college. The above cited case is a decision regarding the policy, allowed to flourish at this time, that denies an "equal chance" to get into college, simply because of the color of one person's skin and grants a greater right to another person because they have a different skin pigmentation. I am unable to grasp how such an attitude or policy can be considered as "equal".

I am totally with you. The best person for the job right! It really defeats the purpose of a free market society. I believe that it was good at one point and has served it purpose. I too am not racist but I am a "minority" per-se. I don't consider myself better or worse than anyone because of my culture but if someone thinks less of me because of it and hire me on the premise of affirmative action I would rather not work there.

I have never been in favor of affirmative action. It creates more of a division of race and ethnicity than it cures It also creates a climate of suspicion and hate. I do believe all people should get a chance to go to college but on their own merit and if remedial help is needed give it to them.

Affirmative action IS discrimination under another name. Discrimination on the basis of race is ALWAYS wrong.
Don C: The question was about if affirmative action is FAIR. Supreme Court rulings are NOT about fair. In this case, I would argue they are not about legal either.

Affirmative action judges based on race, so it's a racist policy.

Do you think racism is fair?
Racism has been used against blacks for more than 400 years, and it is still being used against blacks.
Affirmitive Action is a tool that levels the playing field a bit.
If the United States wasn't so racist, it would not be necessary, but America still remains very much racist.
