It's commonly used as a term meaning you are a citizen of the United States, but technically anyone who was born on either of the two continents, North and South America, is an american.

As the term is most commonly applied, It means you are a citizen of (or were born in) the United States of America, but some argue that any resident of North or South America has the right to use the term American.

One born of legal citizens of these United States or having legally immigrated from another nation having decided to abandon that identity for one as an American citizen.
Emotionally?
One possessing pride of his homeland (USA) and desiring to preserve its constitution and the rights provided within. To be willing to work hard and strive to achieve success in whatever sense that means (legally though). A willingness to sacrifice for others and to undertake to preserve the honor of these United States.
