The pills you're feeling are probably from polyester blended with the cotton. Try for 100% cotton. Avoid "sateen"; the weave is comparatively weak and you'll be replacing them sooner. Look for "Egyptian Cotton", "Pima Cotton" or "Supima" -- these are long-fibered cottons used for better sheeting.

JC Penney's sheets are usually good value for the price;
watch for sales. Other reliables include LandsEnd and Springs.

Plain old boring white is often cheapest, and it can be bleached.

Sheet thread counts make the difference in the quality and comfort. Buy nothing less than 350 or 400. Wash them in cold water and dry them on low as they can shrink if you do differently. You can find higher thread counts at many stores but I tend to buy at Linens n Things with their sales and 20% coupons. I picked up a 1000 count set on sale for $89 and took the discount on top. What a fabulous feel. You can find the deals if you look.

JC Penney has good ones and often on sale several times a year. You want about a 350-400 thread count. Any higher than that and you are getting luxury sheets, but you are wasting your money. You can find an assortment of colours and styles there as well.

I got some inexpensive bamboo sheets at Target awhile back and they have been my favorite sheets ever. They are 400 thread count I think and have been washed mulitple time. No little balls yet and still as soft as ever.

I usually go to Bed Bath and Beyond. You can always find a great deal there. I like 400-500 thread count. Personally, I think that the higher thread count sheets seem to get hot at night. I think it may be because they don't let as much air through. I dunno!! Good luck!!
