The military base in Cuba was acquired by the US during the war against Spain which was included when the latter ceded its territories to the US.

We signed the lease after the Spanish American War, when we saved their asses. The terms of the lease require both sides to back out. Only one has no say so, so we have been sending rent checks all these years, and Castro says he doesn't cash them. We don't care though.
