The military base in Cuba was acquired by the US during the war against Spain which was included when the latter ceded its territories to the US.

When we had a war in the late 1800's we kept a military base there.Castro was considered a friend during the cuban revolution til he came into power and formed a dictatorship himself.....George

We signed the lease after the Spanish American War, when we saved their asses. The terms of the lease require both sides to back out. Only one has no say so, so we have been sending rent checks all these years, and Castro says he doesn't cash them. We don't care though.

What puzzles me is that there was a Bay of Pigs 'invasion', when the US already had a military base there.
