You have to distribute the ^2
(4x^2)^2 <-- this becomes --> 4^2 times (x^2)^2
4^2 = 16
(x^2)^2 <--this is a power to a power and the rule is to multiply the exponents, it equals; x^4
Put that together and get: 16x^4

Hi,
1) Raise the number to the power outside the parentheses: 4² =16
2) For the variable, multiply the inside and outside exponents:
(x²)² = x^4
Result: 16x^4.

(x^2)^2 is the same as x^(2*2)
so square the 4 and multiply the exponents to get
