They were bees that nested in the ground in a Michigan suburb, and one day I found them all dug up. No one in my family dug them up, and we think an animal might have done this, but we don't know what kind of animal or why. What really happened?

I've never heard of "bees" nesting in the ground. Wasp do. Many animals might dig up something because they can hear the noise that we can't. It could be a dog or cat from the neighborhood, or if you have wildlife foxes, raccoons and skunks. If they are bees any of the wild animals could smell the honey. Got any bears.

Bet it was a local exterminator. Check w/ your county and see of someone complained about them.
