the best theory I've seen is that they were actually following the fisheries, that there is an offshore "highway" of prime habitat that stretches/stretched all the way across the north Pacific, just off the coasts of Asia and North America.

There is a lot of debate as to the ethnic origins of the travellers, and also as to when they arrived. For a long time there was resistance to the idea that peopel were in NA before the land bridge, but now that's a widely accepted concept. People used boats, whether from north Asia, Polynesia, or even across the Atlantic (the least popular hypothosis),

The Inuit (Eskimoes) who came later were definitely from Asia, but those who were long called Indians remain a debate. Most natives themselves insist that they were always here. Even if one disagrees, one should respect their beliefs.

It is theorized that many things could have played a role in influencing the first Asiatic explorers to make the cross.

The first is of course, weather. A dramatic climate change forced some of them move farther east follow the coast and eventually finding the splotchy area that was the Bering land bridge. As they fished they kept on the move, following the migrating fish schools until they worked their way into a more hospitable area of plenty that was previously un-inhabited.

The other romantic theory is that it was Human's own natural will for exploration. However they survival of the fittest theory above, is the more likely candidate.
