I find it's always darkest when I have to get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.

True because our eyes need to adjust from being in the light so a dark room looks much darker. As our pupils dilate then we can see more in the dark and it doesn't look as dark.
As for a blackout...I'm guessing the same would be true as well.
