My Ob/Gyn put me on Ondansetron for severe morning sickness, has any one you been put on this? If so, I'd like a little reassurance that it's safe, I know it's kind of crazy, but it worries me.

I am currently 23 1/2 weeks pregnant and have been on ondansetron since 10 weeks. I tried 3 medications before it and nothing worked, but this was a miracle- besides being expensive :). I take it once or twice a day and my doctor has reassured me numerous times that it is completely safe. I plan to take it until my baby is born.

Ondansetron (or Zofran) is considered safe for pregnancy. It is a Class C drug, I believe, and you can find more information about it at http://www.safefetus.com

Zofran has been used for many years for severe morning sickness and has an excellent track record. Although very expensive it has been a lifesaver for many women whose sickness caused dehydration which endangers both mom and baby. A lot of mothers with severe morning sickness are able to say home by taking Zofran, thus avoiding long hospitalizations with IV meds.

Any possible side effects from taking the medication are definitely outweighed by the benefits provided by the drug.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

I have ondansetron, and I haven't had any side effects of any kind! Just make sure you use it as directed by your obgyn! I hope this helps!

It is absolutely safe. In fact, with women who have extreme hyperemesis (vomiting all the time) they sometimes put them on a continuous infusion pump through a tiny IV.

We use it all the time on pregnant women. It works very very well.
