but when you realize you went to sleep, the news is on? Since retiring, I can't seem to stay awake the way I did when I was working.

Yep, been there done that. I get off work, go visit mom and dad for a minute and then back home. Try to watch at least one of the court shows, but go to sleep. Then if a show is coming on later that I want to watch, I take another short nap so I can stay up to watch it, still go to sleep anyway. By the time I wake back up, the show is just going off.

I used to laugh at my dad. He would stay up to watch the weather which was the last part of the local news. Anyway he would doze off when the news started, and then wake up right after the weather! I can now do the same thing, but I just go to bed. I don't usually watch any TV. I get some shows off of the internet and play them through my TV.

I don't do that but my husband does it a lot , I can usually hear him snoring all the way upstairs , so I sneak up and turn the tv off and he wakes up and says ,Hey! I'm watching that, every darn time. I go to bed about one am and get up at 8:00am to see my grandaughter off to school then sometimes catch a few more hours berfore I get up for the day. I'm supposed to be retired, but I don't feel retired!

Oboy. And how. Actually, my hubby's worse than I am. He's an avid watcher and sets two or three VCRs and watches live. So many channels are showing late-night second-showings that he doesn't miss much.

Unless I'm interested in watching a show with him, I keep myself busy in the kitchen, laundry room or just reading.

I don't have that problem. My problem is that I plan to watch a program and my husband is watching the SPEED Channel. LOL!!! We record our favorite programs to watch later.
