Sometime when I finish a mission and go to another area a lost and found box appears which lets me take lost or leaft behind stuff for free. How can I activate it? On demand

You can't.
That box lets you get stuff you accidentally did not pick up on the instanced missions. (The ones that net you the symbols and skill points.) The only time that box will appear is if you finish a co-op mission and did not pick up a piece of loot the game assigned to you. It will not appear for just wandering around the world map.

You can't. It only comes up after a co-op mission when there are left-over enemy drops that no-body picked up.
