Look at the odometer. Usually by the speedometer. If is electronic, you might need the ignition key to light up for you.
If is been tamper with is hard to tell by just looks. You can judge the condition of the vehicle by looks, but that is all you can do about it.

You look at the odometer. If it's mechanical it may not have the correct mileage because they go to 99999 and then reset to zero because they don't have the digit to show over 100,000 miles. If it's electronic type it does.
You can also get a general idea by the year. Older would have more miles, and the average is about 1,000 miles a month, 12,000 a year. So you'd expect to see 60,000 miles on a 2002 model.

If you don't trust the odometer than look at the steering wheel and the shift knob or lever also look at the gas and brake pedals if they look excessively worn or if the brake pedal has a worn spot than the car more than likely has high miles the ignition and drivers side door are also dead give aways if they are very scratched or if they have a loose feel to them than this is also dead give aways. If the drivers side door sounds like crap when you close the door or if you have a hard time getting the door to close than this could also be a give away. And Finlay if the engine knocks on start up and continues to knock for anything longer than 2 seconds than this will indicate excessive engine wear and poor maintenance also if the transmission slips or shifts hard or takes its time to shift and feels sluggish than look else ware. Hop these tips help.

trick question? I'm guessing it's too obvious to say the odometer?
is your odometer broken? or has it passed the mechanical limit (like rolled over on the older cars that only reflected 99,999.9 miles)???
some of the newer cars can be hooked up to certain types of diagnostic machines and they can tell approximate miles or at least approximate hours of run time on the engine...

It is impossible to tell if someone has disconnected the odometer or if the cable or sensor were broken for awhile. If they tried to roll back the odometer it will usually have a white line running around at least one of the numbers.

well looking at the odometer helps. but if you mean visually sometimes you can tell by how clean it is under the hood or by how little the carpets or seats are worn inside. cleaner means less use

i take it you don't trust the odometer (mileage meter). other tell tale signs of hi milage are: worn pedels, worn carpet or flooring, oil color, how clean the engine is, shocks are weak, was the last owner a traveler or home body. ask if you want to know
