Since it is going into your flat I would start with dimensions, make sure it will fit and still look good and not take the entire room. Next would be style so that it is pleasing for you and last but not least comfort! After all YOU will sleep on it. I got back issues, my bed is very important to me, I am one of those that can not sleep in a hotel, damn beds are so soft and worn I wake up half paralyzed. Good Luck in your new flat.

If you are asking about the physical bed itself, buy the best you can afford. Shop the finer stores to understand how quality furniture is built and go from there. Information is free. If you are asking about mattresses, you must go to the mattresses stores and try them out with a qualifed sales person, not some cheap shop. The mattress will determine how you will sleep. The quality of the actual furniture piece will determine how it will hold up over the time you wish to keep it.

Lay down on the bed and see if its comfortable. Dont buy the 1st thing you lay down on...try many of them.
Check for you preference on firmness or cushiness
See if it comes with a warantee, if not I would not buy it.
Decide what size you want. Beds usually come in twin, full, queen and king and California King which is longer.
Find out what kind of deals come with the bed you prefer, such as a free frame or pillows or mattress cover.

Look to see how the wood is attached on the new set. Many bedroom sets today are held together with glue and staples.Try to find a hardwood and not particle board. That will depend on your budget.

aesthetics, funtion, and strength! basic principle of Architects and Interior designers.

aesthetics - color, shape, prints, extras (should match your personality)

Funtions - Dimensions, foam type, frabric type etc.(should match you room)

Strength - durability - how solid? how are structural members attatched? (should stay for a long time)

Most important Price! (should fit the budget) hehehe

Definitely durability. I say really save up and buy the one you want. It should last for YEARS. Go for name brand, just my opinion.
