definition- a very small organ located in the cell. there are many of them.
examples- cell wall, rough endoplasmic reticulum, smooth endoplasmic reticulum, vacuole, mitochondira, cytopskeleton, chloroplasts, and golgi apparatus (there is a lot more, email me if you need more)
characteristics- separately enclosed in its own lipid membrane, more organelles in eukaryotic cells than prokaryotic cells, only in cells. it is in the cytoplasm of the cell, which is everything inside the cell besides the nucleus

Well first of, there's lots of different types of organelles, and quite often trillions of each type within a single person, or plant, or cat, etc.
So you want the characteristics of organelles, or the characteristics of *an* organelle. Sorry to be a pedantic sod, maybe it was just a typo, but that's the sort of thing that really makes a difference on an exam.
Anyways... on ORGAN is a particular part of your body (or your cat's body, or a plant). It would have a particular shape, a structure, and a particular job.
An ORGANELLE is a particular part of a *cell* that does a particular job. You might be able to pick it out as a particular region under a microscope, or an electron microscope. Each type might have a characteristic shape, a known structure, and its own particular function or functions. A lot of organelles involve membranes, (just like the main cell membrane, but inside the cell) which mean they have a separate little area inside the cell with a different mix of chemicals in. Like a little bag around them. These are the 'membrane-bound organelles'.
Thats a basic definition. "characteristics" is a pretty imprecise term, so if that's the whole question, i'd say its a bad question. They won't expect you to know anything that's not in your textbooks or coursnotes though, so have a look through those now you know what you're looking for, and you'll probably get a better idea of what they expect you to know.

An organelle is a small structure inside the cytoplasm of a cell. Endoplasmic reticulum, vacuoles, chloroplasts, lysosomes, and Golgi bodies are some organelles. Nucleus and ribosomes are not organelles.
Characteristics:
1. Found in the cytoplasm of the cell.
2. Surrounded by their own membrane that separates the organelle contents from the rest of the cell.
3. Has a specific job to do to help the cell function.
